Yogi Adityanath launches first phase of Census 2027 in Uttar Pradesh

Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, launched the first phase of the Census 2027 preparation in Lucknow on April 26, 2024. This phase focuses on mapping and updating the directory of villages and towns across the state.

The process involves collecting detailed information about geographical boundaries, administrative units, and infrastructure within each village and town. This updated directory will serve as the foundation for the actual house-listing and population enumeration scheduled for 2027.

Approximately 8.25 lakh enumerators will be deployed across Uttar Pradesh for this preparatory work. They will utilize a mobile application, developed by the Office of the Registrar General & Census Commissioner, India, to collect and upload data digitally. This app aims to improve data accuracy and speed up the process.

The state government has allocated ₹27 crore for the first phase, covering expenses related to training, logistics, and the mobile application. Officials emphasize the importance of accurate mapping for effective planning and resource allocation.

This census will be the first after the delimitation exercise based on the 2011 census. The updated data will be crucial for revising electoral constituencies and determining representation in legislative bodies.

The census will also collect data on various socio-economic indicators, providing insights into demographic changes, literacy rates, employment patterns, and housing conditions. This information will be vital for formulating targeted policies and development programs.

The Registrar General & Census Commissioner, M.P. Jain, highlighted the significance of public cooperation for the success of the census. He urged citizens to provide accurate information to enumerators. Uttar Pradesh, being the most populous state, plays a critical role in the national census. The state last underwent a full census in 2011. The current preparatory phase is expected to be completed by November 2024.
