West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose dissolved the State Legislative Assembly on June 13, 2024, following the conclusion of the 18th Legislative Assembly’s term.
The dissolution occurred after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) retained power in the state with a significant majority in the 2021 Assembly elections. The TMC won 213 seats, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured 77 seats.
The newly elected 17th Lok Sabha members from West Bengal were sworn in on June 19, 2024. The TMC won 29 of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state, significantly increasing its national presence. The BJP secured 7 seats, and the Congress and Left Front each won 1 seat.
The Governor’s decision follows the constitutional provision allowing for assembly dissolution upon the completion of its term. The term of the current assembly concluded on June 12, 2024.
The dissolution paves the way for fresh elections to the West Bengal Legislative Assembly, though the timing of these elections will be determined by the Election Commission of India. Currently, no date has been announced.
Mamata Banerjee continues as the Chief Minister of West Bengal, having been sworn in for her third consecutive term in May 2021. The TMC’s performance in the 2021 assembly elections and the recent Lok Sabha polls demonstrates its continued dominance in state politics.
The dissolution is a routine administrative process following the end of an assembly’s tenure and does not indicate any political instability.
