The Tamil Nadu government has withdrawn the enhanced security cover provided to actor Vijay following requests from him, citing inconvenience caused by the security arrangements.
Vijay, a popular film star, had previously been granted enhanced security – a Grade-I security cover – after receiving perceived threats during a recent political rally related to his intention to launch his political party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). This heightened security involved a dedicated team of police personnel accompanying him.
However, Vijay expressed his discomfort with the security detail, stating it disrupted his daily routines and caused difficulties for the public. He formally requested the withdrawal of the security cover through a letter to the Director-General of Police.
The state government, acknowledging Vijay’s concerns and after assessing the situation, accepted his request and withdrew the enhanced security on May 16, 2024. Standard security protocols will continue to be in place.
The initial provision of enhanced security stemmed from intelligence reports suggesting potential threats during his political engagements. Vijay has been actively touring Tamil Nadu, mobilizing support for his new party ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The decision to withdraw the security is seen as respecting Vijay’s personal preferences and ensuring minimal disruption to public life. Police officials confirmed that while the dedicated security team has been removed, necessary security arrangements will remain in effect during his public appearances and events, ensuring his safety and maintaining law and order. The government maintains its commitment to providing a secure environment for all citizens, including those involved in political activities.
