Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) team from Telangana secured first prize in the Underground Mines Rescue category at the International Mines Rescue Competition (IMRC) 2023, held in Zambia.
The SCCL team competed against teams from 17 countries including Australia, Canada, China, and South Africa. The competition assessed teams on their speed, efficiency, and safety protocols in simulated underground mine rescue scenarios.
The SCCL team demonstrated expertise in various rescue techniques, including first aid, victim extrication, and hazard identification. They successfully navigated a complex simulated mine environment, effectively managing challenges like gas leaks, structural instability, and locating trapped miners.
This is the first time an Indian team has won the first prize in this specific category at the IMRC. Previously, SCCL teams participated in 2008, 2010, and 2018, achieving commendable performances but not securing the top position.
The SCCL team comprised 6 members, all experienced professionals from the company’s rescue and safety departments. They underwent rigorous training and preparation for the competition, focusing on enhancing their skills and teamwork.
The IMRC is a biennial event organized by the International Committee on Underground Mine Ventilation and the International Mines Rescue Committee. It aims to promote best practices in mine safety and rescue operations globally.
SCCL Chairman and Managing Director N. Sridhar praised the team’s achievement, highlighting it as a testament to the company’s commitment to worker safety and its investment in training and equipment. He stated the win will boost the morale of SCCL employees and further strengthen the company’s reputation in the mining industry.
The Telangana government also congratulated the SCCL team on their success, recognizing their contribution to enhancing India’s standing in the international mining community. The team’s performance is expected to encourage other Indian mining companies to participate in future IMRC events.
