Tensions are high in Kolkata’s New Market area following a demolition drive initiated by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) on February 29th, 2024. The KMC used bulldozers to raze structures, primarily decades-old shops, citing illegal construction and non-payment of property taxes.
The demolition targeted shops along Bertram Street and Hogg Street, areas known for wholesale garment and cosmetic businesses. Shop owners allege they were given insufficient notice and claim the action is linked to a dispute over a road widening project. They assert that previous assurances regarding rehabilitation were disregarded. Many claim to have valid licenses and have been operating for generations.
The suddenness of the drive sparked protests, with shop owners and employees attempting to resist the demolition. Several individuals were detained by police as clashes erupted. Opposition parties, including the BJP and the Left Front, have criticized the KMC’s actions, alleging political motives and accusing the ruling Trinamool Congress of targeting businesses.
KMC officials maintain the demolition was a necessary step to address illegal encroachments and improve traffic flow. They state that notices were served and opportunities for redressal were provided. The KMC also highlights the significant amount of unpaid property taxes owed by the shop owners.
The affected shop owners are seeking legal recourse and demanding compensation for their losses. They are also requesting a transparent rehabilitation plan. The demolition has disrupted business activity in New Market, a vital commercial hub, and raised concerns about the future of long-standing businesses in the area. The situation remains volatile with ongoing protests and legal challenges expected. The KMC plans to continue the drive to clear further encroachments. Local traders are planning a larger protest movement. The High Court has directed the KMC to file an affidavit detailing the demolition process and the basis for the action.
