Statehood will be achieved soon: Puducherry CM Rangasamy

Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy expressed confidence that statehood for Puducherry will be achieved “soon,” citing ongoing discussions with the Central Government. He stated the matter is under “active consideration” and positive signals have been received.

Rangasamy was addressing a public meeting in Coimbatore, where he highlighted the unique history and cultural identity of Puducherry, formerly a French colony. He argued that statehood is a long-standing aspiration of the people and is essential for the Union Territory’s overall development.

He detailed the challenges faced by Puducherry as a Union Territory, including limitations in financial powers and decision-making autonomy. Statehood, he believes, will empower the region to better manage its resources and implement policies tailored to its specific needs.

The Chief Minister mentioned previous resolutions passed by the Puducherry Legislative Assembly advocating for statehood and reiterated his commitment to pursuing the issue with the central leadership. He emphasized the need for a separate identity and the ability to formulate independent policies for the region’s progress.

Rangasamy also spoke about the potential benefits of statehood in attracting investment and fostering economic growth. He believes that a fully empowered state government can create a more conducive environment for businesses and entrepreneurs.

He acknowledged the support received from various political parties and individuals in the statehood movement and thanked them for their continued encouragement. He also appealed to the people of Puducherry to remain hopeful and united in their pursuit of statehood.

The visit to Coimbatore was primarily to invite participants to the Puducherry Statehood Awareness Conference scheduled to be held in Puducherry on July 23rd. He aims to garner broader support for the cause and further strengthen the movement for statehood.
