Vietnamese President Vo Van Thuong is currently on a state visit to India, beginning with a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan on July 19, 2023. This marks his first visit to India, signifying the strengthening comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations.
President Thuong was received by President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The ceremony included a guard of honour, showcasing the traditional Indian hospitality. Discussions between the two presidents focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation across various sectors, including defence, security, trade, and energy. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
Key areas of discussion included boosting economic ties, with a target to reach $15 billion in bilateral trade by 2030. Opportunities for collaboration in areas like digital technology, green energy transition, and sustainable development were also explored. The leaders acknowledged the growing people-to-people connections and emphasized the importance of cultural exchanges.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted Vietnam’s crucial role in India’s ‘Act East’ policy and the Indo-Pacific vision. He also expressed gratitude for Vietnam’s support during India’s G20 presidency. President Thuong reciprocated by acknowledging India’s consistent support for Vietnam’s development and its role in regional forums.
The visit includes official talks, a state banquet, and engagements with business leaders and representatives from various sectors. A joint statement outlining the outcomes of the discussions and future areas of cooperation is expected to be released. This visit is considered a significant step in further consolidating the long-standing friendship and strategic partnership between India and Vietnam, particularly in the context of evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-Pacific. The leaders also discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern.
