The Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) has extended its support to actor Vijay’s newly launched political party, the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). This support comes with a request for a “fair and appropriate share” in the Tamil Nadu government, should the alliance come to power.
TNCC President K. Selvaperuntagaphan stated the decision was made after discussions with TVK representatives and aligns with the Congress’s goal of defeating the BJP-led government at the Centre. He emphasized the need for a strong alliance of like-minded parties to achieve this objective.
The Congress believes TVK’s entry into the political arena will energize youth and garner support from a wider demographic, particularly given Vijay’s significant fan base. The party anticipates a positive impact on the Dravidian heartland, traditionally dominated by the DMK and AIADMK.
Selvaperuntagaphan highlighted the Congress’s consistent opposition to the BJP’s policies and its commitment to secularism, social justice, and federalism – values they believe are shared by TVK. He also pointed to the Congress’s historical contributions to Tamil Nadu’s development.
While extending support, the TNCC has clearly indicated its expectation of proportional representation in the government if the alliance wins the upcoming elections. This includes a share in ministerial positions and other key roles. The specifics of seat-sharing arrangements are yet to be finalized and will be discussed further with TVK.
The move is seen as a strategic attempt by the Congress to strengthen the opposition front in Tamil Nadu and increase its bargaining power within the alliance. It also aims to capitalize on Vijay’s popularity to broaden its voter base and challenge the dominance of the existing political players. The Congress hopes this alliance will present a viable alternative to the current ruling party and contribute to a change in government at both the state and national levels.
