The United Democratic Front (UDF) in Kerala secured a significant victory in the Lok Sabha elections, winning 18 of the 20 seats. This marks a substantial improvement from their 2019 performance and represents the best result for the Congress-led alliance since 1989.
The Left Democratic Front (LDF), the ruling coalition in the state, managed to win only one seat, a historic low for the front. This defeat is a major setback for Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the Communist Party of India (Marxist). Shashi Tharoor of the Congress won in Thiruvananthapuram, defeating LDF’s Panniyan Ravindran.
Key UDF wins included Rahul Gandhi in Wayanad, and significant victories in constituencies previously held by the LDF, such as Thrissur, Pathanamthitta, and Idukki. The UDF’s performance indicates a strong anti-incumbency sentiment against the LDF government in Kerala.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) failed to win any seats, despite a strong push and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s extensive campaigning. Surendran K. lost in Wayanad to Rahul Gandhi, and Anil Antony lost in Attingal. The BJP’s vote share did increase in some constituencies, but it wasn’t enough to translate into wins.
The election results are being interpreted as a rejection of the LDF’s policies and a strong endorsement of the UDF’s narrative. The UDF’s campaign focused on issues like unemployment, price rise, and alleged corruption within the LDF government.
The victory is seen as a boost for the Congress party nationally, and a significant morale booster ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections. The LDF is now facing a period of introspection and reassessment of its strategies. The results demonstrate a clear shift in the political landscape of Kerala, with the UDF establishing a dominant position.
