54% of 55,467 snakes rescued in and around Hyderabad are venomous

## Hyderabad Snake Rescue Statistics – Summary

A recent analysis of snake rescues in and around Hyderabad reveals that over half (54%) of the 55,467 snakes rescued between 2020 and 2024 were venomous. The data, compiled by the NGO Wildlife SOS and the Telangana Forest Department, highlights a significant presence of potentially dangerous snakes in the region.

Russell’s vipers accounted for the highest proportion of venomous snake rescues, comprising 33% of the total. Cobras were the second most frequently rescued venomous species, making up 14%. Kraits accounted for 4% of rescues, while saw-scaled vipers represented 3%.

Non-venomous snakes comprised 46% of the total rescues. Rat snakes were the most common non-venomous species rescued, followed by sand boas and python species.

The analysis indicates a peak in snake rescue calls during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons (July to November), attributed to increased breeding activity and snakes seeking higher ground to avoid flooding. Urbanization and habitat loss are cited as key factors driving snakes into human-populated areas in search of food and shelter.

The data was gathered from rescue operations conducted by the Wildlife SOS Rapid Response Unit, working in collaboration with the Telangana Forest Department. The organizations emphasize the importance of public awareness regarding snake identification and responsible behavior when encountering snakes. They advise against attempting to handle snakes and instead recommend contacting trained snake rescuers.

The report also notes a rise in the number of rescues involving snakes in residential areas, particularly in and around water bodies and green spaces. This underscores the need for proactive measures to mitigate human-snake conflict, such as maintaining clean surroundings and avoiding unnecessary disturbance of natural habitats. The organizations continue to conduct educational programs to promote coexistence and dispel myths surrounding snakes.
