A man in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district was arrested for allegedly murdering his wife, reportedly due to her weight. The incident occurred in the village of Pedakakani on February 29th, 2024.
The accused, identified as Venkata Ramana, reportedly argued with his wife, Lakshmi, over her obesity and allegedly assaulted her, leading to her death. Police stated the argument escalated into physical violence, resulting in Lakshmi sustaining fatal injuries.
According to police reports and family members, Venkata Ramana frequently harassed Lakshmi about her weight, making derogatory comments and subjecting her to emotional abuse. Neighbors reported hearing frequent arguments between the couple regarding this issue. Lakshmi’s mother filed a complaint alleging her daughter was subjected to ongoing harassment and torture by her husband and in-laws due to her physical appearance.
The police registered a case under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and initiated an investigation. Venkata Ramana was taken into custody and is currently undergoing interrogation. The body of Lakshmi was sent for post-mortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
Initial investigations corroborate the allegations of domestic violence and harassment. Police are also investigating the role of other family members, particularly Venkata Ramana’s mother, in the alleged harassment of Lakshmi.
