Watch: Mamata Banerjee refuses to resign, rejects poll defeat | Above the Fold | 05.05.2026

Mamata Banerjee addressed supporters following the Lok Sabha election results, firmly rejecting calls for her resignation as West Bengal Chief Minister. She acknowledged the election outcome as unexpected and expressed disappointment with the performance of her Trinamool Congress (TMC) party, which secured only 29 seats – a significant drop from their previous tally.

Banerjee attributed the defeat to a multifaceted conspiracy involving the BJP, central agencies like the CBI and ED, and a biased media. She specifically accused the media of deliberately portraying the BJP favorably and downplaying the TMC’s achievements. She also pointed to alleged manipulation of EVMs, though without providing concrete evidence.

Despite the setback, Banerjee vowed to continue her fight and rebuild the party. She announced plans for a thorough review of the election results at the district level to identify the reasons for the TMC’s losses. She emphasized the need for organizational restructuring and a renewed focus on grassroots-level engagement.

She directly addressed the opposition’s demands for her resignation, stating she would not step down and would instead continue to serve the people of West Bengal. Banerjee highlighted her government’s welfare schemes and development initiatives, asserting that these programs have significantly improved the lives of the state’s citizens.

Banerjee also expressed concern over the potential impact of the BJP-led government at the center on federalism and the rights of states. She warned against any attempts to impose a uniform civil code and reiterated her commitment to protecting the secular fabric of the country. She concluded by urging her supporters to remain steadfast and united in the face of adversity, promising to fight for their rights and interests. She plans to continue as the leader of the opposition in the state assembly.
