Six individuals were arrested in Telangana’s Shadnagar and Mathkal forests for illegal wildlife hunting. The arrests followed a joint operation by the Forest Department and the Cyberabad Police, acting on intelligence regarding poaching activities.
The accused were found in possession of hunting equipment including weapons, vehicles, and the carcasses of several animals. Authorities recovered remains of three deer, a peacock, and a hare. Investigations revealed the group engaged in spotlight hunting, using high-powered lights to locate and kill animals at night.
The apprehended individuals have been identified as residents of Hyderabad and surrounding areas. They reportedly confessed to hunting in the forests for recreational purposes and meat consumption. The group had been conducting these hunts for a considerable period, evading detection by authorities.
Forest officials stated that this is a significant breakthrough in curbing illegal hunting in the region. The Shadnagar and Mathkal forest areas have been identified as vulnerable to poaching due to their proximity to urban centers and relatively easy access.
The seized items include a Bolero vehicle, two motorcycles, hunting knives, and spotlights. The carcasses of the animals have been sent for post-mortem examination.
Police have registered cases against the accused under relevant sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and the Indian Penal Code. Further investigation is underway to determine the extent of their involvement in other poaching incidents and to identify any potential accomplices. Authorities are also focusing on strengthening surveillance and patrolling in vulnerable forest areas to prevent future occurrences of illegal hunting. The Forest Department emphasized its commitment to protecting the region’s wildlife and ensuring strict enforcement of wildlife protection laws.
