Siddalinga Swami says there’s severe water crisis, governance failure in Jewargi

Siddalinga Swami of Murugha Math expressed severe concern over the water crisis in Jewargi, Karnataka, attributing it to governmental failures and a lack of foresight in water management. He criticized the existing governance system for neglecting the basic needs of the people, specifically access to drinking water.

The Swami highlighted that Jewargi, historically not facing such acute shortages, is now grappling with a dire situation where people are forced to travel long distances for water, and livestock are suffering. He pointed to the failure to effectively utilize available water resources, including rivers and potential groundwater recharge areas.

He specifically questioned the completion of the Upper Bhadra Project, alleging delays and mismanagement have exacerbated the crisis. Despite the project’s potential to alleviate water scarcity, its prolonged incompletion has left the region vulnerable. The Swami also criticized the lack of proper planning regarding water distribution and the absence of measures to prevent water wastage.

Furthermore, he voiced disappointment with elected representatives and officials, accusing them of prioritizing personal interests over public welfare. He stated that the current crisis is a direct consequence of their negligence and lack of accountability.

Siddalinga Swami urged the government to immediately address the water scarcity issue and implement long-term solutions. He emphasized the need for a comprehensive water management policy that prioritizes conservation, efficient utilization, and equitable distribution. He also called for increased public awareness regarding water conservation and responsible water usage.

He warned that if immediate action isn’t taken, the situation will worsen, leading to social unrest and further hardship for the people of Jewargi and surrounding areas. The Swami’s statements represent a strong critique of the current administration’s handling of the water crisis and a plea for urgent intervention.
