Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code have been imposed around the Panchamasali Guru Peetha in Harihar, Davangere district, Karnataka, following tensions over a proposed name change for the Peetha.
The dispute centers around a decision by the Peetha’s pontiff, Vachanananda Swamiji, to rename the institution from “Panchamasali Guru Peetha” to “Jnana Yogashrama.” This move has triggered protests from a faction within the Panchamasali community who believe the name change disregards their identity and historical significance. They argue the current name reflects their social standing and struggle for recognition.
Protests began on March 9th and escalated, leading to clashes between supporters and opponents of the name change. Several individuals were detained for attempting to breach the security cordon around the Peetha. The Davangere district administration, fearing further unrest, invoked Section 144, prohibiting gatherings of more than five people within a 2 km radius of the Peetha. This order is effective until March 16th.
Local authorities have deployed a significant police force to maintain law and order. Discussions are underway to mediate between the pontiff and representatives of the protesting community members. The pontiff maintains the name change is intended to broaden the Peetha’s appeal and focus on spiritual teachings, not to erase the community’s identity.
Community leaders opposing the change have expressed concerns that the decision was taken unilaterally without consulting key stakeholders. They are demanding a reconsideration of the proposal and a more inclusive decision-making process. The situation remains sensitive, and authorities are working to prevent further escalation while attempting to find a resolution acceptable to all parties involved.
