CBI silence on KLIP exposes BJP–BRS understanding: Ponguleti

The article discusses the alleged tacit understanding between the BJP and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in Telangana, highlighted by the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) lack of action regarding allegations against Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, a recent BRS entrant and potential Lok Sabha candidate.

The core issue revolves around a complaint filed in 2021 alleging that Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy and others fraudulently obtained ₹100 crore in loans from State Bank of India using forged documents related to a road project. Despite the CBI registering a Preliminary Enquiry (PE) in 2022, no substantial progress has been made, and no First Information Report (FIR) has been filed.

Critics, particularly Congress leaders, argue this inaction demonstrates a quid pro quo arrangement. They suggest the BJP is deliberately slowing down the investigation to facilitate Reddy’s candidacy and potentially benefit from a split in the opposition vote share in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The BRS, previously a strong opponent of the BJP, has recently shown signs of warming up to the national party, fueling speculation of a possible alliance.

The article points out that the CBI’s silence is particularly striking given the agency’s swift action in cases involving opposition leaders in other states. This perceived double standard reinforces the allegations of political bias and a covert understanding.

Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, previously with the Congress, joined the BRS in June 2023 and is expected to contest the Lok Sabha seat from Khammam. The Congress alleges that the BJP is protecting Reddy to weaken the opposition’s chances in the Khammam constituency.

The article also notes that the CBI has not responded to queries regarding the status of the investigation, further adding to the suspicion. The lack of transparency from the agency is seen as evidence supporting the claims of a deal between the BJP and BRS. The Congress party has demanded a thorough investigation and a public explanation from the CBI regarding the delay.
