India, Japan hold key meeting on healthcare in Delhi

India and Japan convened a crucial meeting in Delhi focused on bolstering healthcare cooperation, co-chaired by Mansukh Mandaviya, India’s Minister of Health and Family Welfare, and Keizo Takemi, a Member of the House of Councillors, Japan. The meeting centered around implementing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in January 2023, aiming to enhance collaboration in healthcare and medical research.

Key discussion points included promoting medical tourism, establishing sister-city relationships between healthcare facilities, and facilitating the exchange of healthcare professionals and students. Both nations expressed strong interest in leveraging each other’s strengths – India’s pharmaceutical production capacity and affordable healthcare solutions, and Japan’s advanced medical technology and innovation.

A significant focus was placed on exploring collaborations in areas like digital health, telemedicine, and the development of pharmaceuticals. Japan highlighted its interest in India’s generic drug manufacturing capabilities, while India sought Japanese expertise in areas such as cancer treatment and regenerative medicine.

The meeting also addressed the potential for joint research and development projects, particularly in tackling infectious diseases and non-communicable diseases. Both sides agreed on the importance of sharing best practices in hospital management, nursing care, and healthcare financing.

Furthermore, the discussion extended to regulatory harmonization to streamline the approval processes for medical products and devices. This aims to facilitate faster access to innovative healthcare solutions in both countries.

Both India and Japan reaffirmed their commitment to a long-term, strategic partnership in healthcare, recognizing its vital role in ensuring the well-being of their populations and contributing to global health security. A joint working group will be established to further detail the action plan and timelines for implementing the agreed-upon initiatives. The next meeting of this group is scheduled to be held in Japan.
