The Congress party has criticized the BJP-led government for a perceived sluggishness in private investment, attributing it to an atmosphere of fear and distrust fostered by the increased use of investigative agencies like the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and Income Tax (IT) department.
Congress spokesperson Manish Tewari highlighted a significant decline in new project announcements in the first half of FY24 compared to the same period last year, citing a Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) report. The report indicates a 36.3% fall in new project announcements, with private investment experiencing a particularly sharp drop of 40.7%.
Tewari argued that the frequent raids and investigations targeting businesses, even those with no apparent wrongdoing, are creating a climate of uncertainty that discourages investment. He specifically mentioned recent IT raids in Rajasthan ahead of the state assembly elections, suggesting a politically motivated use of these agencies. The Congress alleges that these actions are intended to intimidate businesses and force them to contribute to the ruling party’s election funds.
The party further pointed to a decline in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows, attributing it to the same factors. They claim that investors are hesitant to commit capital to India due to concerns about arbitrary actions by investigative bodies and a lack of policy predictability.
Congress contends that the government’s focus on “headline management” and “event management” is masking underlying economic weaknesses. They argue that the government is prioritizing political gains over genuine economic growth and that the current situation is detrimental to job creation and overall economic prosperity. The party demanded a white paper detailing the reasons for the decline in private investment and a commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent environment for businesses. They also called for an end to the alleged misuse of investigative agencies for political purposes.
