Two Indian journalists win Pulitzer Prize for highlighting cyber fraud

Two Indian journalists, Neha Dixit and Hannah Ellis-Petersen, have been awarded the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting. They received the honor for their collaborative work exposing a vast network of disinformation spread through fake news and scams originating in India and extending globally.

Dixit, an independent journalist, and Ellis-Petersen, a correspondent for *The Guardian*, spent a year investigating a sophisticated operation that used fabricated news articles, manipulated social media content, and deceptive websites to target individuals, particularly those in the Indian diaspora. Their reporting revealed how this network engaged in cyber fraud, including romance scams, investment schemes, and the spread of political propaganda.

The investigation, published in *The Guardian*, detailed the operation’s infrastructure, tracing it back to India and identifying key individuals involved. It highlighted the use of artificial intelligence and coordinated disinformation campaigns to influence public opinion and extract money from victims. The reporting demonstrated how the network exploited vulnerabilities in social media platforms and leveraged the trust of diaspora communities.

The Pulitzer committee specifically cited the reporters’ “resourceful and courageous reporting” in uncovering the operation and exposing its global reach. Their work shed light on the growing threat of disinformation and the challenges of combating cyber fraud in a digitally connected world.

Dixit has previously reported on issues like religious extremism and state surveillance in India. Ellis-Petersen has focused on international reporting, including conflict zones and human rights issues. This Pulitzer Prize recognizes their impactful collaboration and their commitment to uncovering hidden truths with significant global implications. The award underscores the importance of investigative journalism in holding power accountable and protecting vulnerable populations from online harm.
