PM Modi condemns attack on Indians in Fujairah Petroleum Zone

India has strongly condemned the drone and missile attacks targeting facilities of the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) in the Fujairah Petroleum Zone in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The attacks occurred on January 29, 2024, and involved three oil tankers.

The Ministry of External Affairs stated that no Indian personnel were injured in the incident, and the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi is in close contact with local authorities. India reaffirmed its commitment to the UAE’s security and stability. The attacks were carried out by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, who claimed responsibility, stating they were in response to Israel’s actions in Gaza.

The incident raises concerns about the escalating tensions in the Red Sea region and its potential impact on energy security. The Fujairah zone is a crucial hub for oil storage and bunkering. The attacks prompted condemnation from several countries, including the UAE, which called for restraint and de-escalation.

India has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution to the conflicts in the region and emphasized the importance of maintaining maritime security. The attacks underscore the vulnerability of critical infrastructure in the region to such acts of aggression. The Indian government is monitoring the situation closely and taking necessary steps to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens in the UAE.

The Houthi attacks are part of a broader pattern of targeting commercial vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, disrupting global trade and raising insurance costs. The United States has also been involved in countering these attacks, launching strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen. India’s focus remains on the safety of its nationals and the stability of the region, vital for India’s economic interests and energy security.
