Southern Railway’s Traction Distribution (T&D) assets achieved their best-ever performance in 2023-24, ensuring minimal disruption on electrified routes. The railway reported 99.97% reliability of its T&D infrastructure, a significant improvement over previous years.
Key achievements include uninterrupted power supply for 358 days across the entire electrified network. This was facilitated by proactive maintenance, advanced monitoring systems, and quick response teams. The railway successfully completed the electrification of 1,429 track kilometers during the fiscal year, bringing the total electrified route length to 7,698 km, representing 72.3% of the total network.
Significant investments were made in upgrading substations and traction posts. This included the installation of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems at 68 substations, enabling real-time monitoring and control of power supply. The railway also focused on preventive maintenance, conducting regular inspections and replacing aging equipment.
To enhance resilience, sectionalizing of the T&D network was prioritized, allowing for isolated faults and minimizing widespread disruptions. Remote monitoring capabilities were expanded, allowing for early detection of potential issues.
The improved performance directly contributed to increased train punctuality and reduced operational delays. Southern Railway transported 3.38 million tonnes of freight using electric locomotives, demonstrating the efficiency of the electrified network.
Future plans include further expansion of the electrified network, modernization of substations with advanced technologies like Gas Insulated Substations (GIS), and implementation of predictive maintenance techniques using data analytics. The railway aims to achieve 100% electrification of its network by December 2024. Focus will also be on training personnel to handle the new technologies and maintain the upgraded infrastructure. The overall goal is to provide a reliable and efficient power supply for both passenger and freight train operations.
