The South Coast Railway Zone has been officially notified by the Ministry of Railways after a decade of discussions and announcements, with headquarters established in Visakhapatnam. Operations are slated to begin from June 1st, 2024.
The new zone is carved out of the existing Waltair division of the East Coast Railway. It will comprise five districts of Andhra Pradesh – Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, and West Godavari.
Key railway divisions falling under the South Coast Railway Zone include Visakhapatnam, Guntur, and Guntakal. The Waltair division will cease to exist and its functions will be integrated into the new zone.
The formation of the South Coast Railway is expected to improve railway connectivity and operational efficiency in the region. It aims to facilitate better planning, development, and execution of railway projects tailored to the specific needs of the South Coastal Andhra region.
The decision addresses long-standing demands from the people and public representatives of the region for a separate railway zone. Proponents argued it would accelerate development and provide focused attention to railway infrastructure in the area.
Initial infrastructure and staff will be transferred from the East Coast Railway. Further recruitment and infrastructure development will follow to fully establish the new zone’s independent operational capacity.
The Railway Ministry has appointed an Additional General Manager to oversee the initial operationalization of the South Coast Railway. A General Manager will be appointed shortly.
The move is anticipated to boost economic activity, tourism, and overall development in the South Coastal Andhra Pradesh region by enhancing rail transport capabilities. The establishment of the headquarters in Visakhapatnam is expected to create employment opportunities and contribute to the city’s growth.
