Raghav Chadha, a Rajya Sabha MP from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), met with President Droupadi Murmu on May 5, 2024. This meeting occurred amidst a political shift as several AAP MPs recently resigned from the party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The core issue revolves around the allegations of coercion and inducements leveled by the AAP against the BJP, claiming the latter is attempting to destabilize the AAP through poaching of its elected representatives. Chadha submitted a memorandum to the President detailing these allegations.
The memorandum specifically names three former AAP MPs – Sushil Kumar Gupta, Swapan Dasgupta, and Ashok Siddharth – who recently defected to the BJP. AAP alleges that these MPs were offered significant inducements, including Rajya Sabha seats and other benefits, to switch allegiance. The party claims this constitutes a violation of the anti-defection law and a subversion of the democratic process.
AAP contends that the BJP’s actions are a direct response to the party’s growing political influence and its challenge to the BJP in several states. They argue that the defections are not based on ideological differences but are motivated by personal gain and political pressure.
The memorandum requests the President’s intervention to uphold the principles of democracy and ensure a fair and transparent political environment. Chadha emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the allegations of poaching and inducement.
The BJP has dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated, asserting that the MPs joined their party voluntarily. They maintain that the AAP is attempting to deflect attention from its own internal issues and declining political fortunes.
The meeting with the President is part of AAP’s broader effort to raise the issue at the national level and seek justice against what they perceive as a systematic attempt to undermine their party. The party plans to continue its campaign against the alleged poaching efforts and will likely approach other constitutional authorities as well.
