A scuba diving team in Karnataka successfully unfurled a massive Indian national flag beneath the sea, achieving a Guinness World Record. The event took place off the coast of Netrani Island in Bhatkal taluk of Uttara Kannada district.
The flag measured 30 meters in length and 20 meters in width, covering an area of 600 square meters. Forty scuba divers participated in the operation, meticulously unfolding the flag at a depth of 30 feet. The entire process, from preparation to unfurling, was carefully documented according to Guinness World Records guidelines, including video and photographic evidence, witness statements, and precise measurements.
The initiative was led by Dive Team Karnataka, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Karnataka Tourism Department, and the Indian Navy. The Navy provided logistical support and ensured the safety of the divers. The event aimed to promote scuba diving tourism in the region and celebrate India’s 77th Independence Day in a unique manner.
The previous record for the largest underwater flag unfurling was held by the UAE, with a flag size of 160 square meters. The Karnataka team’s achievement significantly surpassed this, establishing a new global benchmark. Guinness World Records officially confirmed the record on August 15, 2023.
The team faced challenges including strong currents and maintaining the flag’s integrity underwater. Divers underwent extensive training and practiced the unfurling process multiple times before the final attempt. The flag was made of lightweight, durable material to withstand the underwater conditions.
This accomplishment highlights the growing popularity of adventure tourism in Karnataka and showcases the state’s potential as a premier scuba diving destination. The event also served as a platform to raise awareness about marine conservation and the importance of preserving the underwater ecosystem.
