Wet spell and easterlies likely to bring relief from peak summer heat in State for a week

Tamil Nadu is expected to receive respite from the intense summer heat for the next week due to a developing weather system. A low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas is the primary driver, coupled with the strengthening of easterly winds.

This combination is forecast to bring widespread rainfall across the state, starting with South Tamil Nadu on May 16th and gradually extending to cover most regions by May 17th and 18th. Isolated heavy rainfall is predicted, particularly over southern districts.

Chennai is likely to experience rainfall from May 17th onwards, with moderate to heavy showers expected for several days. The rainfall intensity will be higher during the afternoon and evening hours.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has issued warnings for several districts, including Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, and Virudhunagar, anticipating heavy to very heavy rainfall. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea in these areas.

The current heatwave conditions, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in many parts of the state, are expected to subside due to the rainfall. Day temperatures are likely to decrease by 3-5 degrees Celsius.

The easterly winds, blowing from the Bay of Bengal, will contribute to the increased rainfall and provide a cooling effect. This shift in wind pattern is a key factor in the changing weather conditions.

The rainfall is expected to continue for approximately a week, offering a much-needed break from the scorching heat. However, the RMC cautions that the intensity and distribution of rainfall may vary. The forecast suggests a generally pleasant weather outlook for Tamil Nadu over the coming days, with reduced heat stress and increased humidity. This spell of rain is anticipated to be beneficial for agriculture and water resources in the state.
