Jammu and Kashmir Minister Sakina Itoo has voiced strong opposition to the ongoing demolition of houses and sealing of properties under the guise of an anti-drug campaign in Kashmir. She argues these actions are causing significant hardship to families and are disproportionate to the stated goal.
Itoo, the Minister for Forests, Ecology and Environment, publicly criticized the administration’s approach, stating that targeting entire families for the alleged involvement of one member is unjust and unacceptable. She emphasized the need for a more nuanced and humane strategy to combat the drug menace.
The demolitions, authorized under the Prevention of Illicit Drug Trafficking Act, have sparked widespread protests and accusations of harassment. Residents claim their homes are being destroyed without due process or adequate investigation. Itoo highlighted the emotional and financial distress inflicted upon affected families, particularly women and children.
She questioned the effectiveness of demolitions in addressing the root causes of drug addiction and suggested focusing on rehabilitation and awareness programs instead. Itoo proposed alternative measures like strict surveillance, counseling, and providing livelihood opportunities to vulnerable individuals.
The Minister urged the administration to immediately halt the demolition drive and adopt a more compassionate and legally sound approach. She advocated for a thorough review of the cases before any further action is taken, ensuring that the fundamental rights of citizens are protected.
Itoo’s statement reflects growing concerns within the political sphere and among the public regarding the collateral damage caused by the anti-drug campaign. She stressed the importance of distinguishing between genuine offenders and innocent family members, advocating for a targeted approach that prioritizes justice and rehabilitation over collective punishment. She plans to raise the issue with higher authorities and seek a resolution that balances the need to combat drug trafficking with the protection of citizens’ rights and well-being.
