Stop demolitions, sealing houses under garb of anti-drug campaign in Kashmir: J&K Minister Sakina Itoo

Jammu and Kashmir Minister Sakina Itoo has voiced strong opposition to the ongoing demolition of houses and sealing of properties under the guise of an anti-drug campaign in Kashmir. She argues these actions are causing significant hardship to families and are disproportionate to the stated goal.

Itoo, the Minister for Forests, Ecology and Environment, publicly criticized the administration’s approach, stating that targeting entire families for the alleged involvement of one member is unjust and unacceptable. She emphasized the need for a more nuanced and humane strategy to combat the drug menace.

The demolitions and sealings are being carried out based on provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, which allows for the forfeiture of property allegedly acquired through illicit drug trade. However, Itoo contends that the current implementation lacks due process and is creating a climate of fear and resentment.

She highlighted instances where properties were sealed or demolished without proper investigation or evidence linking them directly to drug-related activities. This has left many families homeless and financially ruined. Itoo questioned the effectiveness of such measures in addressing the root causes of drug addiction and suggested focusing on rehabilitation and awareness programs instead.

The Minister urged the administration to immediately halt the demolitions and sealings and to review the existing guidelines. She proposed a more targeted approach that focuses on identifying and prosecuting actual drug traffickers while protecting the rights and dignity of innocent family members.

Itoo’s criticism reflects growing concerns among political parties and civil society groups regarding the impact of the anti-drug campaign on the civilian population in Kashmir. She believes a collaborative and compassionate approach is crucial to effectively tackle the drug problem without causing undue suffering to the people. She also stressed the importance of providing alternative livelihood options for those affected by drug addiction and their families.
