India, IOM discuss expanding, diversifying regular migration pathways

India and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) held discussions on expanding and diversifying regular migration pathways, focusing on skilled, semi-skilled, and student mobility. The talks aimed to strengthen collaboration on migration governance and address challenges related to irregular migration.

Key areas of discussion included exploring opportunities for bilateral labour agreements, streamlining recruitment processes, and enhancing pre-departure orientation and reintegration support for migrant workers. Both sides acknowledged the significant contribution of Indian migrants globally and the need to ensure their safe, orderly, and regular migration.

The IOM expressed support for India’s G20 presidency priorities related to social inclusion and worker well-being. Discussions also covered leveraging technology for migration management, including digital platforms for skill verification and job matching.

A major focus was on expanding pathways for students, recognizing their potential as future skilled workers. This involves facilitating visa processes, recognizing qualifications, and providing support for their transition into the labour market.

Both India and the IOM emphasized the importance of addressing the root causes of irregular migration, including poverty, lack of opportunities, and climate change impacts. They agreed to collaborate on data collection and analysis to better understand migration trends and inform policy-making.

The meeting highlighted the need for a comprehensive approach to migration management that involves all stakeholders, including governments, civil society organizations, and the private sector. Future collaboration will also focus on combating human trafficking and protecting the rights of vulnerable migrants. The discussions represent a continued commitment to a rights-based and development-focused approach to migration.
