Government appoints Lt Gen NS Raja Subramani (Retd) as next Chief of Defence Staff

Lieutenant General (Retd) Nirbhay Sharma Raja Subramani has been appointed as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of India. The appointment fills a vacancy that existed since the passing of General Bipin Rawat in December 2021.

Subramani, a veteran of the Indian Army, previously served as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff, holding the position until his retirement on February 28, 2024. His military career spans over 37 years, encompassing extensive experience in various command and staff appointments. He has served in diverse terrains including the Western, Eastern, and Northern sectors.

Notably, Subramani has commanded a battalion in the Sikkim sector, a brigade in the Eastern Command, and a division in the Northern Command, areas bordering China. He also served as the Director General of Military Operations (DGMO). His experience is considered particularly relevant given the ongoing situation with China along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The CDS is a crucial position responsible for tri-service coordination – the Army, Navy, and Air Force – and acts as the principal military advisor to the Defence Minister and the Prime Minister. The role was created in 2019 to enhance integration and streamline decision-making within the armed forces.

The government had initiated the search for a new CDS after extensive deliberations. Several potential candidates were considered, but Subramani’s experience and understanding of national security challenges ultimately led to his selection.

His appointment is expected to accelerate the ongoing military reforms, particularly the theaterisation process aimed at creating integrated theatre commands for more effective defense preparedness. The theater commands are designed to ensure better coordination and quicker response times in the face of potential threats. The government anticipates that Subramani will play a key role in implementing these reforms and strengthening India’s defense capabilities.
