The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) hackathon, held in Bengaluru, prominently featured Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven fraud detection as a central theme. The event, attracting over 600 participants, focused on leveraging technology to enhance the integrity of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) scheme, which provides health insurance to vulnerable populations.
A key challenge addressed was identifying and preventing fraudulent claims, a growing concern impacting the scheme’s resources. Participants developed solutions utilizing AI and Machine Learning to analyze claim data, identify anomalies, and flag potentially fraudulent activities. These solutions aimed to detect patterns indicative of inflated bills, duplicate claims, and ineligible beneficiaries.
Several teams presented innovative approaches, including those focusing on predicting fraudulent behaviour based on historical data and provider profiles. Others explored the use of natural language processing to analyze discharge summaries and identify inconsistencies. The National Health Authority (NHA) emphasized the importance of proactive fraud detection rather than reactive measures.
The hackathon also saw solutions aimed at improving beneficiary identification and authentication using technologies like facial recognition and Aadhaar integration. Enhancing data security and interoperability were also significant areas of focus.
Winners were selected across multiple tracks, with the top teams receiving funding and mentorship to further develop their solutions for potential implementation within the ABDM ecosystem. The NHA plans to pilot promising solutions in real-world settings to assess their effectiveness and scalability.
The event underscored the NHA’s commitment to utilizing technology to strengthen the PM-JAY scheme, ensuring its sustainability and maximizing its impact on healthcare access for the intended beneficiaries. The hackathon’s emphasis on AI-driven fraud detection signals a proactive approach to safeguarding public funds and maintaining the scheme’s credibility. The NHA intends to continue fostering innovation through similar initiatives and collaborations.
