Watermelon yields good turnover for Kudumbashree women farmers

## Summary of The Hindu Article: Watermelon Yields Good Turnover for Kudumbashree Women Farmers

Kudumbashree’s collective farming initiatives in Kerala have achieved significant success with watermelon cultivation, generating substantial income for women farmers in the state. This year, over 200 Kudumbashree units cultivated watermelon across 150 acres in Palakkad district alone, yielding approximately 3,000 tonnes.

The project, implemented through the Neighbourhood Groups under Kudumbashree, focused on cultivating high-yielding hybrid varieties. Farmers received support in seed procurement, fertilizer distribution, and technical guidance from the Agriculture Department and Krishi Vigyan Kendra.

This year’s harvest resulted in a total turnover of ₹3.2 crore, with an average profit of ₹60,000-₹80,000 per acre. Some units reported even higher profits, exceeding ₹1 lakh per acre. The success is attributed to coordinated farming practices, direct market linkages, and reduced reliance on intermediaries.

The watermelon was primarily sold through retail outlets established by Kudumbashree and directly to vegetable and fruit merchants, ensuring fair prices for the produce. This direct marketing strategy minimized post-harvest losses and maximized profits for the farmers.

The initiative began modestly in 2018 with a small area of cultivation and has expanded significantly due to its proven profitability. Kudumbashree plans to expand watermelon cultivation to other districts in the coming seasons, aiming to replicate the success achieved in Palakkad.

Beyond economic benefits, the project has empowered women farmers, fostering self-reliance and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. The collective farming model has also strengthened community bonds and encouraged participation in income-generating activities. The initiative demonstrates the potential of Kudumbashree to transform rural livelihoods through strategic agricultural interventions. Future plans include exploring value-added products from watermelon, such as juice and pickles, to further enhance income generation.
