Vehicles with fake number plates used to shoot Suvendu Adhikari’s aide: West Bengal police

West Bengal police are investigating an incident involving the shooting of an aide to Suvendu Adhikari, a BJP leader, in Contai, Purba Medinipur district. The aide, identified as Bhabananda Kar, sustained injuries to his hand.

Initial investigations reveal vehicles with fake number plates were allegedly used in the shooting. Police have seized two vehicles – a black SUV and a motorcycle – both bearing identical registration numbers. This suggests a deliberate attempt to conceal the vehicles’ identities.

The incident occurred near Contai College when Kar was travelling in a vehicle. Unidentified assailants opened fire, resulting in Kar’s injury. Police suspect a pre-planned attack.

Suvendu Adhikari alleges the shooting was orchestrated by Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers and points to a history of violence in the area. He claims the TMC is attempting to create an atmosphere of fear ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. TMC leaders have denied any involvement, dismissing the allegations as politically motivated.

Police have formed special teams to investigate the case and are examining CCTV footage from the area to identify the perpetrators. They are also questioning witnesses and local residents. The recovery of vehicles with fake number plates is a key focus of the investigation, indicating an attempt to evade identification and accountability.

The incident has heightened political tensions in Purba Medinipur, a district considered a stronghold for both BJP and TMC. Security has been increased in the area to prevent further violence. The Election Commission of India has sought a report from the West Bengal government regarding the incident. The police are treating the case as an attempt to disrupt the peaceful conduct of the upcoming elections. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the motive behind the shooting and identify all individuals involved.
