Karnataka’s Department of Energy has mandated uniforms and identity cards for all its employees across the state, aiming to improve public interaction and enhance the department’s image. The order applies to all staff, including engineers, technicians, and administrative personnel, working in Electricity Supply Companies (ESCOMs) – BESCOM, MESCOM, CHAMUNDESHWARI Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (CESC), and Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company (GESCOM).
The directive, issued on May 16th, specifies a standardized uniform consisting of navy blue shirts and trousers (or salwar kameez for women). The ID cards will prominently display the employee’s name, designation, and a unique identification number. This measure is intended to easily identify genuine employees and prevent instances of impersonation, addressing public concerns regarding unauthorized individuals posing as power department staff.
The move follows numerous complaints from the public about individuals falsely claiming to be electricity department workers to carry out illegal activities, including collecting unauthorized fees or providing incorrect information. The department believes the uniforms and ID cards will build trust and transparency in their dealings with consumers.
ESCOMs have been instructed to procure uniforms and ID cards for their employees at their own expense. They are also responsible for ensuring all staff adhere to the new guidelines. The department has emphasized the importance of visible identification, particularly during field visits and interactions with the public.
The order also aims to improve the overall professionalism and discipline within the department. Officials state that the standardized appearance will foster a sense of unity and accountability among employees. Implementation is expected to be completed swiftly across all ESCOMs to maximize the benefits of the initiative. The department anticipates a positive response from the public and a reduction in fraudulent activities related to electricity services.
