TUDA seeks liberal Central funding for Tirupati infrastructure

The Tirupati Urban Development Authority (TUDA) has requested increased central funding for infrastructure projects in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, citing the city’s status as a major pilgrimage and tourism destination. Currently, central funding is limited, requiring the state government to bear a significant portion of project costs.

TUDA is seeking a funding pattern similar to that offered for projects in other prominent tourist locations. They propose a 90:10 funding split between the central and state governments, arguing Tirupati’s unique demands justify this level of support. The city experiences a massive influx of pilgrims annually, straining existing infrastructure.

Key projects requiring funding include a multi-level car parking facility near the Sri Venkateswara Temple, aimed at easing traffic congestion; improvements to the Alipiri-Tirumala footpath route, enhancing pilgrim safety and convenience; and the development of a ring road to divert heavy traffic away from the city center.

TUDA officials highlight the economic benefits Tirupati generates, contributing significantly to both state and national revenue. They argue that investing in infrastructure is crucial for sustaining this economic growth and improving the experience for millions of visitors.

The authority has submitted detailed proposals to the central government outlining the project requirements and the anticipated impact of increased funding. They emphasize the need for a long-term infrastructure development plan to address the growing demands of the city.

Specifically, the proposed car parking project is estimated to cost around ₹250 crore, while improvements to the footpath route and the ring road are projected to require substantial investment as well. TUDA believes that with adequate central assistance, these projects can be completed efficiently and contribute to Tirupati’s overall development as a world-class pilgrimage and tourism center. The request is framed as essential for managing the large-scale logistics and ensuring a comfortable experience for devotees.
