Suvendu Adhikari to become the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal

Suvendu Adhikari has been elected as the BJP Legislature Party leader in West Bengal. This positions him as the Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly.

The decision was made at a meeting of BJP MLAs held at the party’s Hastings office in Kolkata. State BJP president Sukanta Majumdar formally announced Adhikari’s election.

Adhikari secured the position despite speculation regarding central leadership preferences, reportedly favoring other contenders like Agnimitra Paul. His election signifies a consolidation of support from a significant number of MLAs within the West Bengal BJP.

The Nandigram MLA previously held the position of Leader of the Opposition during the last assembly, following the 2021 elections. He defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the 2021 Nandigram by-election, though lost the seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Agnimitra Paul was appointed as the Deputy Leader of the BJP Legislature Party. Ashok Lahiri will serve as the Chief Whip, and Mihir Goswami and Dr. Amal Sarkar have been appointed as Whips.

The appointments come after the BJP’s performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections, where the party won 12 seats in West Bengal. The party aims to strengthen its organizational structure and prepare for future electoral battles, including the upcoming panchayat elections.

Adhikari’s leadership is expected to be crucial in challenging the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government and mobilizing the BJP’s support base across the state. The appointments reflect an attempt to balance regional and organizational considerations within the party. The BJP intends to aggressively raise issues concerning corruption and governance against the TMC government.
