Mani Shankar Aiyar, a veteran Congress leader, has publicly criticised the party’s decision to align with the Tamil Nadu Kongu Vellala Gounder Peravai (TVK), a community organisation, for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. He termed the alliance as reeking of “low political opportunism” and a departure from the Congress’s traditional secular and inclusive principles.
Aiyar expressed his dismay in a letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, arguing that the TVK is not a political party but a caste-based organisation. He believes partnering with such a group compromises the Congress’s commitment to social justice and secularism, particularly given the party’s historical opposition to caste-based politics. He specifically referenced the party’s past stance against the DMK’s perceived caste politics.
He questioned the rationale behind the alliance, suggesting it was driven by a desperate need for votes rather than a principled political strategy. Aiyar highlighted the TVK’s limited political influence and questioned whether the potential electoral gains justify the ideological cost. He fears the alliance will alienate traditional Congress voters and damage the party’s reputation.
Aiyar also pointed out the potential for the alliance to be counterproductive, as it could reinforce caste identities and hinder efforts to build a broader, more inclusive political coalition. He argued that the Congress should focus on forging alliances with established political parties based on shared ideological principles rather than seeking support from community-based organisations.
He further stated that the decision was taken without adequate consultation within the party and expressed his disappointment that his concerns were not considered. Aiyar’s criticism reflects a growing internal debate within the Congress regarding its electoral strategies and its commitment to core ideological values. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the party’s secular credentials and resisting the temptation to engage in short-sighted political calculations.
