Pedestrian killed in early-morning hit-and-run on Bengaluru’s MG Road

A pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run incident on Bengaluru’s MG Road in the early hours of Sunday, February 18th. The deceased has been identified as 62-year-old G. Venkatesh, a retired employee of the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC).

The incident occurred around 4:30 AM near the Anil Kumble Circle. Venkatesh was reportedly walking on the footpath when a vehicle, suspected to be a car, veered onto the pavement and struck him. The driver did not stop and fled the scene.

Passersby discovered Venkatesh with severe injuries and immediately alerted the police. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

The Central Traffic Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) and are currently investigating the incident. They are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to identify the vehicle involved and the driver. Initial reports suggest the vehicle may have been a dark-colored sedan.

Police are appealing to the public for any information that could lead to the identification of the vehicle or the driver. They are particularly interested in any dashcam footage from vehicles that were in the vicinity around the time of the incident.

This incident has once again highlighted concerns about road safety and the prevalence of hit-and-run cases in Bengaluru. Activists and citizens have been demanding stricter enforcement of traffic rules and improved pedestrian infrastructure to prevent such tragedies. The police are focusing on tracing the vehicle based on available CCTV evidence and witness accounts. The body was handed over to the family after post-mortem.
