A sixth person has been arrested in connection with the attempted rape of a woman in Kochi, Kerala on February 17th. The arrested individual, identified as a native of Ernakulam, allegedly assisted the main accused by providing logistical support and being present at the location during the crime. Police state he aided in the planning and execution of the attack.
The incident occurred near the Kaloor-Kathrikadavu road, a relatively public area. The woman was allegedly abducted in a car and subjected to a brutal assault attempt.
Five individuals were previously arrested, including the prime accused, Roy Vayaliyil, who has a history of similar offenses and was previously acquitted in a 2017 case due to lack of evidence. Police investigations revealed Vayaliyil had been following the victim for some time and meticulously planned the attack, allegedly inspired by a Telugu film.
The investigation has focused on the accused’s prior acquittal and the potential lapses in the previous case. Concerns have been raised regarding the handling of the 2017 case and whether stricter monitoring could have prevented the recent attack.
