## Summary of “New invasive moth threatens Ladakh’s farm-based economy”
A new invasive moth species, *Spodoptera latifascia*, is posing a significant threat to agricultural crops in Ladakh, particularly barley, a staple food and key component of the region’s farm-based economy. First detected in 2023, the moth has rapidly spread across Leh and Kargil districts, causing substantial damage to barley fields and raising concerns about food security.
Unlike previously encountered armyworm species, *S. latifascia* exhibits a unique feeding pattern, attacking even mature barley plants, leading to complete defoliation and yield losses. Traditional pest control methods have proven largely ineffective against this new species. The moth’s ability to reproduce quickly and its wide host range – impacting other crops like wheat and wild grasses – exacerbate the problem.
Ladakh’s unique agro-climatic conditions, characterized by cold, arid landscapes and a short growing season, make it particularly vulnerable to invasive species. The region’s limited agricultural land and reliance on barley for both consumption and livestock feed amplify the potential economic impact.
Researchers from the Defence Institute of High Altitude Research (DIHAR) are actively studying the moth’s life cycle, spread, and potential control measures. Initial findings suggest the moth likely arrived in Ladakh through the movement of agricultural produce or packaging materials from other parts of India.
Current control strategies focus on biological control using *Bacillus thuringiensis* (Bt)-based biopesticides, alongside monitoring and early detection efforts. However, the effectiveness of these measures is still being evaluated. The article highlights the urgent need for a comprehensive pest management strategy, including farmer awareness programs, quarantine measures to prevent further spread, and research into long-term sustainable solutions to protect Ladakh’s agricultural sector and food security. The situation demands collaborative efforts from scientists, local authorities, and farming communities to mitigate the threat posed by this invasive moth.
