Man killed, another injured in elephant attack in Gudalur

A man was killed and another sustained injuries in a wild elephant attack near Gudalur in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu on May 16, 2024. The deceased has been identified as Palani, a resident of Mullankolli estate. The injured individual, identified as Ravi, is undergoing treatment at the Gudalur Government Hospital, and his condition is reported to be stable.

The incident occurred while Palani and Ravi were reportedly attempting to chase away a wild elephant that had entered a tea estate. According to forest department officials, the elephant, believed to be a lone male, had been frequenting the area and causing damage to crops. The victims, along with other estate workers, were trying to deter the elephant from entering the tea plantations when the animal turned aggressive and attacked them.

Following the attack, the forest department initiated efforts to track and monitor the elephant’s movements. A team of foresters and anti-depredation staff have been deployed to the area to prevent further incidents and ensure the safety of residents. Compensation for the deceased’s family is being processed as per government norms.

This incident highlights the increasing human-animal conflict in the region, particularly involving elephants. The Nilgiris district is known for its dense forest cover and significant elephant population, leading to frequent encounters between humans and elephants, especially near agricultural lands and estates. Forest officials have urged residents to exercise caution and avoid approaching wild elephants, and to immediately report any sightings to the forest department. The department is also working on long-term mitigation strategies, including creating alternative corridors for elephants and strengthening anti-depredation measures.
