A woman from Andhra Pradesh’s Konaseema district, identified as Lakshmi, who was stranded in Muscat, Oman, has been successfully repatriated with the assistance of the Indian Embassy in Muscat and facilitated by MP Margani Bharat.
Lakshmi travelled to Muscat on February 22, 2024, for domestic work, recruited by an agent named Rama Rao. Upon arrival, she was allegedly subjected to harassment and abuse by her employer, and her passport and mobile phone were confiscated. She sought help through a video message that went viral on social media, appealing for rescue.
MP Margani Bharat responded to the plea and immediately contacted the Indian Embassy in Muscat. The embassy intervened with the local authorities, securing the release of Lakshmi’s passport and mobile phone. They also ensured her safe departure arrangements.
Lakshmi arrived at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad on May 9, 2024, and was received by representatives from the MP’s office. She expressed gratitude to the Indian Embassy, MP Bharat, and others who assisted in her repatriation.
The incident highlights the vulnerabilities faced by migrant workers, particularly women, and the importance of responsible recruitment practices. MP Bharat emphasized his commitment to assisting Telugu people in distress abroad and urged prospective migrant workers to register with the Ministry of External Affairs’ e-Migrate portal before travelling for employment. This registration helps the government track and assist citizens working overseas. The MP’s office also provided Lakshmi with financial assistance for her travel back to her home district.
