In just four months of 2026, Tamil Nadu records 2.63 lakh dog bites, 17 deaths

Tamil Nadu has recorded 2.63 lakh dog bite incidents and 17 deaths due to rabies in the past four months (September 2023 – January 2024). This data was revealed in a recent review meeting chaired by Health Minister Ma. Subramanian.

The highest number of dog bite cases were reported in Tiruchy (33,835), followed by Salem (28,818), Erode (26,789), and Namakkal (24,484). Chennai recorded 18,048 cases.

The government has initiated several measures to address the rising incidents. These include intensifying vaccination drives for stray dogs, ensuring availability of anti-rabies vaccines in all government hospitals, and increasing public awareness campaigns.

Currently, there are around 8.5 lakh stray dogs in the state. The government aims to vaccinate at least 80% of them. A key focus is on post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) – the vaccine administered after a dog bite – and ensuring its accessibility. The state has sufficient stock of PEP vaccines.

The review meeting highlighted concerns about the effectiveness of the current animal birth control (ABC) program. The Minister stated that the ABC program will be strengthened and streamlined. Private veterinary hospitals will also be involved in the ABC program to increase its reach and efficiency.

The government is also considering increasing the number of dog catchers and improving waste management practices, as uncollected garbage attracts stray dogs. Funds have been allocated to local bodies for these initiatives.

The Health Department has instructed all government hospitals to report dog bite cases immediately and to provide prompt treatment to victims. A dedicated helpline number will be established to address public concerns related to dog bites and rabies. The government is committed to reducing dog bite incidents and eliminating rabies in the state.
