A grey heron in Kannur, Kerala, has tested positive for H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu), confirmed by the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal. This is the first confirmed case of bird flu in Kerala this year, triggering heightened surveillance and control measures.
The affected bird was found dead in Cherukunnu, Kannur, on February 26th. Samples were sent to NIHSAD, and the results received on March 1st confirmed the presence of the virus. Following the confirmation, the Animal Husbandry Department has initiated rapid response measures within a 1-kilometer radius of the location where the bird was found.
These measures include culling of poultry—approximately 4,800 birds including ducks, chickens, and other domestic fowl—in the affected area. Disinfection protocols are being strictly implemented, and bio-security measures have been enhanced. Officials are actively monitoring the health of birds in the surrounding areas for any signs of illness.
The department is also focusing on preventing the spread of the virus to other parts of the state. Increased surveillance is being conducted at poultry farms and markets. Public awareness campaigns are underway to educate people about the disease and preventive measures.
Previous outbreaks of bird flu in Kerala occurred in 2021 in Alappuzha and Kottayam districts, leading to large-scale culling operations. The current situation is being closely monitored to prevent a recurrence of widespread outbreaks. The department has requested assistance from the central government to manage the situation effectively. The focus remains on containing the outbreak and preventing further spread to protect both poultry and human health. No human cases have been reported so far.
