Fabricated LPG shortage narrative fuels black-market cylinder sales across Hyderabad

Hyderabad is experiencing a surge in black market LPG cylinder sales driven by a fabricated narrative of shortage. Despite oil companies asserting adequate stock levels, rumors circulating via WhatsApp and local gossip claim cylinders are unavailable, prompting panic buying and exploitation by unscrupulous dealers.

The article details how legitimate LPG distributors report normal supplies, with sufficient stock available at godowns and deliveries proceeding as usual. However, a false impression of scarcity has been created, leading consumers to seek cylinders from unauthorized vendors at inflated prices – ranging from ₹1,200 to ₹1,500 per cylinder, significantly above the subsidized rate of around ₹900.

Several factors contribute to this artificial shortage. Some dealers are allegedly hoarding stock to create scarcity and maximize profits. Others are exploiting the fear among consumers, particularly those reliant on LPG for daily cooking. WhatsApp forwards claiming supply disruptions are rapidly spreading misinformation.

Civil Supplies officials are conducting raids on illegal vendors and registering cases against those involved in black marketing. They emphasize that there is no real shortage and urge consumers to report instances of overcharging or unavailability at authorized dealerships. The officials attribute the issue to deliberate attempts to create panic and profit from it.

The problem is particularly acute in older parts of Hyderabad. Authorities are working to dispel the rumors and ensure fair distribution. They are also appealing to the public to rely on official sources for information regarding LPG availability and to avoid contributing to the spread of false narratives. The coordinated effort involves increased vigilance, public awareness campaigns, and strict action against those found engaging in illegal activities. The situation highlights the vulnerability of supply chains to misinformation and the importance of verifying information before reacting to rumors.
