DRDO, IAF successfully conduct maiden trial of indigenous TARA glide weapon

India successfully conducted the maiden flight trial of the Tara Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) system. The trial took place on April 27, 2024, at the Chandipur Integrated Test Range (ITR) off the coast of Odisha.

Tara is a futuristic weapon system developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It is designed to neutralize hostile targets using a high-powered directed energy beam. The system demonstrated in-flight control, target tracking, and successful engagement of a pilotless target aircraft.

The DRDO confirmed the trial met all intended objectives, marking a significant step towards integrating DEW technology into India’s defense capabilities. The weapon system’s precise nature – whether laser, microwave, or another form of directed energy – wasn’t explicitly detailed in the report.

Officials stated the successful trial validates the technology and opens avenues for further development and deployment. The system’s potential applications include countering drones, missiles, and other aerial threats.

The development of Tara aligns with global trends in defense technology, where DEWs are increasingly seen as a promising countermeasure against emerging threats. These weapons offer advantages like speed-of-light engagement, precision, and potentially lower costs per shot compared to conventional interceptor missiles.

The trial involved multiple DRDO laboratories and was supported by other defense organizations. Data collected during the flight trial will be analyzed to refine the system’s performance and prepare it for future trials and eventual induction into the armed forces. The successful test underscores India’s growing self-reliance in advanced defense technologies. Further details regarding the system’s range, power output, and specific target types are expected to be revealed as the project progresses.
