The Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] have announced their unconditional support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) to ensure a stable government in Tamil Nadu following the recent Lok Sabha elections. This decision comes after discussions between the leaders of the respective parties and the TVK.
Both CPI and CPI(M) stated their support is crucial given the current political situation where no single party secured a clear majority. They aim to prevent a potential political instability and ensure a government that prioritizes the interests of Tamil Nadu and its people.
The CPI’s State secretary, R. Mutharasan, emphasized the need for a secular, democratic government and highlighted the TVK’s commitment to these principles as the reason for their support. He also criticized the BJP’s attempts to gain power through alternative means.
CPI(M) State secretary K. Balakrishnan echoed similar sentiments, stating their support is to uphold federal principles and safeguard Tamil Nadu from what they perceive as the BJP’s divisive politics. He stressed the importance of forming a government that will address the pressing issues faced by the state.
The TVK, led by Velmurugan, welcomed the support from both communist parties. They expressed confidence that this alliance will strengthen their position and enable them to effectively represent the concerns of the people.
This support is significant as it adds to the existing coalition supporting the TVK, which already includes the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and its allies. The combined strength of these parties is expected to provide a comfortable majority in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
Both CPI and CPI(M) have clarified that their support is not conditional and is solely aimed at establishing a stable and people-centric government in Tamil Nadu. They will not be seeking any ministerial positions as part of this arrangement. The focus remains on preventing the BJP from influencing the state’s political landscape.
