Andhra Pradesh’s Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare has directed all blood banks in the state to maintain adequate blood reserves and proactively organize blood donation camps, particularly focusing on rare blood groups. This directive comes amidst concerns about potential shortages, especially during the upcoming festival season and anticipated increase in trauma cases.
Blood banks have been instructed to ensure a minimum stock of at least 200 units of each major blood group (A+, A-, B+, B-, O+, O-, AB+, AB-) and a sufficient supply of platelets. They are also tasked with identifying and reaching out to regular donors to encourage repeat donations.
The order emphasizes the importance of collaboration with NGOs, educational institutions, and corporate entities to organize donation camps. Banks are to prioritize camps in areas with limited access to blood banking facilities. Specific attention should be given to sourcing rare blood groups like Bombay blood group and other uncommon types.
Authorities have highlighted the need for strict adherence to quality control measures during blood collection, processing, and storage. All blood banks must maintain proper documentation and ensure the safety of both donors and recipients. Regular inspections will be conducted to verify compliance with these guidelines.
The directive also addresses the issue of wastage, urging banks to optimize blood utilization and minimize discarding of usable blood components. Efficient inventory management and timely issue of blood to patients are crucial.
The Health Department has established a dedicated helpline and nodal officers at the state and district levels to address any challenges related to blood availability and donation. These resources will facilitate coordination between blood banks, hospitals, and donors. The aim is to ensure uninterrupted access to safe and quality blood for patients in need across Andhra Pradesh.
