Bharat is sacred, bound together by a sense of oneness: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a function commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Somnath Temple’s reconstruction, highlighting its historical significance and the extensive restoration work undertaken. The original temple was repeatedly destroyed and rebuilt over centuries, representing resilience and the enduring spirit of India.

Modi emphasized the temple’s symbolism as a testament to India’s cultural identity and its resistance against foreign invasions. He detailed the historical context, referencing attacks by Mahmud of Ghazni and subsequent attempts to rebuild the temple, culminating in the efforts led by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and K.M. Munshi post-independence. Patel’s role was particularly underscored, with Modi noting his determination to ensure the temple’s reconstruction despite initial opposition.

The Prime Minister spoke about the recent restoration and development work at the temple complex, including the creation of the ‘Shri Somnath 51 Shakti Peeth,’ featuring 51 Shakti Peeths from across India within the temple premises. This initiative aims to connect devotees with various sacred sites and promote national unity. He also mentioned the implementation of modern technologies for visitor management and enhanced facilities for pilgrims.

Modi connected the temple’s reconstruction with the broader narrative of a resurgent India, shedding colonial influences and reclaiming its heritage. He criticized past governments for allegedly neglecting temple restoration and emphasized the current government’s commitment to preserving and promoting India’s cultural legacy.

The event also saw the unveiling of a digital exhibition showcasing the temple’s history and the reconstruction process. Modi reiterated the importance of preserving historical sites not merely as structures of stone but as embodiments of India’s civilization and spiritual values. He encouraged continued efforts to connect future generations with their cultural roots.
