Two TVK supporters injured in altercation over bursting firecrackers

Two Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) supporters sustained injuries during a clash in Sivakasi over the bursting of firecrackers on Sunday night. The incident occurred near the Railway Station in Sivakasi, Virudhunagar district.

The altercation began when a group of individuals allegedly objected to TVK supporters celebrating with firecrackers, reportedly due to the party’s stance against firecracker usage, advocating for alternative celebratory methods like lighting lamps. Verbal arguments escalated into a physical confrontation.

Police report that K. Murugan, 32, and M. Karuppasamy, 28, both TVK supporters, were injured. Murugan suffered injuries to his left hand, while Karuppasamy sustained injuries to his head. Both were admitted to the Sivakasi Government Hospital for treatment and their conditions are reported as stable.

The Sivakasi East Police have registered a case based on a complaint filed by Murugan, naming five individuals as suspects. The police are investigating the incident, categorizing it under sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.

TVK leader T. Velmurugan condemned the attack and stated that his party members were celebrating a recent political success when they were attacked. He accused individuals associated with firecracker manufacturers of orchestrating the violence due to the TVK’s opposition to firecracker use, which they perceive as a threat to their industry.

The police are currently gathering evidence and questioning witnesses to ascertain the exact sequence of events and the motives behind the attack. Further investigation is underway to identify and apprehend the suspects involved. The incident highlights the ongoing debate surrounding firecracker usage, particularly in Sivakasi, a major hub for firecracker production.
