## NCRB Report 2023: Key Findings Summary
The latest National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report reveals a complex crime landscape in India for 2023. While overall crime rates saw a decrease, cybercrime registered a significant surge.
**Overall Crime Rate:** Total reported crimes decreased by 3.6% in 2023 compared to 2022, recording 30.66 lakh incidents against 31.80 lakh. This marks the first drop in reported crimes since 2017.
**Indian Penal Code (IPC) Crimes:** Cases registered under the IPC decreased by 4.5% to 27.02 lakh in 2023. Murder cases saw a slight increase of 5.8%, with 29,878 cases reported. Attempt to murder cases decreased by 6.4%. Cases related to assault (causing hurt) also showed a decline.
**Cybercrime:** Cybercrime cases witnessed a substantial rise of 26.2% in 2023, with 71,882 cases reported compared to 56,880 in 2022. Fraud-related cybercrimes constituted the largest share, accounting for 65.2% of all cybercrime incidents. Online banking fraud and OTP fraud were prominent categories.
**Crimes Against Women:** Crimes against women increased by 4.4% to 51,340 cases. However, the rate of charge-sheeting in these cases improved to 76.7% from 73.1% in 2022. Cases of domestic violence and attempt to commit sexual assault showed increases.
**Crimes Against Children:** Crimes against children decreased by 10.4% to 1.49 lakh cases. However, cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act increased by 6.3%.
**State-wise Data:** Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of IPC crimes (6.83 lakh), followed by Maharashtra (4.62 lakh) and Madhya Pradesh (3.29 lakh). Uttar Pradesh also recorded the highest number of cybercrime cases (14,844).
**Other Notable Trends:** Cases related to prohibition saw a significant decrease. Theft cases continued their downward trend. Riots and communal violence also showed a decline.
